Why I Avoided Petroleum & Harsh Ingredients in My Lip Balm
Share
When I began creating my lip balm, I knew one thing for sure: I didn’t want a long list of complicated ingredients.
Lip products are something we reach for many times throughout the day. Because of that, I wanted something simple, nourishing, and made with ingredients I truly felt good about putting on my lips.
As I started looking more closely at many lip products on the market, I noticed that a lot of formulas were surprisingly long and filled with ingredients that didn’t always feel necessary. That’s when I began asking myself a simple question:
Could lip care be simpler?

The Problem With Overly Complicated Lip Products
Many lip balms contain long ingredient lists — sometimes 15, 20, or even more components.
Often these ingredients are included for reasons like texture, shelf life, or cost efficiency. While those things can be useful in manufacturing, I personally wanted something that felt more straightforward.
For me, the more ingredients a product contains, the harder it becomes to understand what is truly helping your lips — and what might simply be there as a filler.
I wanted every ingredient in my formula to have a clear purpose.

Why Petroleum Is So Common in Lip Products
Petroleum-based ingredients (often listed as petrolatum) are extremely common in lip care products because they create a strong barrier on the skin that helps prevent moisture from escaping.
You’ve probably seen petroleum used in products like Vaseline and many traditional lip balms.
Interestingly, petroleum originally came from the petroleum industry and was discovered as a waxy by-product during oil drilling. Over time, it began to be refined and used in skincare products because of its ability to seal moisture into the skin.

Why I Personally Chose to Avoid Petroleum
While petroleum works by creating a protective barrier on the lips, I personally wanted something that felt more nourishing to the lips themselves.
Lip care sits directly on our lips and is something we reapply throughout the day, so I wanted my formula to be made with ingredients that felt intentionally chosen for that purpose.
For me, lip care should feel thoughtful — created specifically to support and nourish the lips, not simply coat them.
That’s why I chose to focus on simple ingredients that have been used in natural skincare for generations.

The Ingredients I Chose Instead
Instead of creating a complicated formula, I focused on a small number of ingredients that each serve a clear purpose.
Beeswax
Beeswax helps protect the lips while also helping lock in moisture.
Shea Butter
Shea butter is known for being deeply nourishing and rich in fatty acids that help soften and condition the skin.
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil helps create a smooth, moisturizing feel while helping lips stay soft.
Vitamin E
Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant and also helps keep oils fresh and stable.
Each ingredient was chosen carefully so that the formula would feel simple, balanced, and nourishing.

Why Simplicity Matters in Lip Care
The beauty world often focuses on complex formulas and long ingredient lists. But sometimes the most beautiful products are the simplest ones.
When each ingredient in a product has a clear purpose, the formula becomes easier to understand and easier to trust.
For me, simplicity isn’t about doing less — it’s about choosing ingredients more intentionally.
⸻
The Intention Behind My Formula
When I created this lip balm, I didn’t want it to feel like just another product.
I wanted it to feel thoughtful. Something simple, comforting, and nourishing — made with ingredients chosen specifically for the lips.
Lip care is something we reach for throughout the day, and I believe it should feel good knowing exactly what you’re putting on your skin.
⸻
Simple Ingredients, Chosen With Purpose
There are so many complex formulas in the beauty world, but sometimes the most beautiful products are the simplest ones.
Each ingredient in my lip balm was chosen with intention — not to fill space in a formula, but to truly support soft, healthy lips.
Because when it comes to lip care, I believe less — when chosen thoughtfully — can truly be more.
